Stream Drums: A Subtle Water Sound Unlike Anything Else
A stream drum - a round percussion instrument similar to an ocean drum, but with one key internal difference: special partitions through which balls of varying sizes roll, creating a sound that evokes a flowing stream or gentle rain - not the roar of waves, but something softer and more flowing.
You hold it in your hands, turn it slowly, and hear a quiet, flowing, unpredictable stream. That's the essence of the stream drum: a similar rotating principle to the ocean drum, but a different sound - more subtly shifting, more meditative.
How Does a Stream Drum Differ from an Ocean Drum?
At first glance, the two instruments look alike: both round, both filled with balls inside, both producing sound through rotation. But there is one important structural difference - the partitions.
In an ocean drum, the balls roll freely across the membrane and create a broad, wave-like sound. In a stream drum, internal partitions cause the balls to move more slowly and along more complex paths. The result is a softer, more fragmented sound - closer to the babbling of a flowing stream than the roar of ocean waves.
Stream drums use balls of varying sizes, which produces a richer sound texture where the movement of both larger and smaller elements can be heard simultaneously.
Stream drums are played by holding the drum vertically.
Stream Drums in Our Range
Our range features two types of stream drums:
Standard - a blue body with vivid patterns. Characterised by a softer sound, with smaller balls inside that make it easy to maintain an even, steady tone. A good choice for those who want an instrument that stands out both in sound and appearance. Examples: Stream drum 19cm, Stream drum 28cm
Natural - a natural wood finish. The balls inside are larger, giving a less delicate sound that more closely resembles a mountain stream or water falling from a height. Suits those who prefer a more natural, understated aesthetic. Examples: Natural Stream drum 19cm, Natural Stream drum 40cm
How to Choose a Stream Drum?
The main criterion is size:
Small (13-19 cm) - compact, lightweight, and comfortable to hold in one hand. Well suited for casual everyday use. Compared to larger models, they are more convenient and more accessible in price.
Larger (28-40 cm) - a richer and deeper sound, suited for group work or those looking for an instrument with more noticeable resonance. The 40 cm model is the largest and loudest option in this category.
Who Are Stream Drums For?
Music therapists - the sound of a stream drum is exceptionally gentle. This is especially valuable when working with people for whom stronger sounds may be too intense - for example, young children, older adults, or those who need a particularly soothing sonic environment.
Meditation and focus - the sound of flowing water naturally quiets the mind. A stream drum at home or in a practice space is a simple but effective tool for creating a calming sonic background. Its sound can be produced continuously, so rather than interrupting, it supports sustained attention.
Hobbyists and collectors - this is a less common instrument than an ocean drum or rainstick, and among water sound enthusiasts it is often valued as a welcome addition to a collection - something most people haven't heard before.
