Rainsticks: How They Work, What They're Made of, and How to Choose the Right One
A rainstick is a tube-shaped percussion instrument, typically made from bamboo, cactus, or plastic, filled with small granules that cascade through the interior when tilted - creating a sound closely resembling falling rain.
You tilt it. The granules begin to fall inside. And suddenly - the room fills with a calm, soothing sound of rain. One of the simplest and yet most captivating instruments you can hold in your hands.
How Does a Rainstick Work?
The principle is straightforward: a long tube, filled with small granules or seeds. When you tilt the stick one way or the other, the granules slowly cascade through the internal structure and produce a sound remarkably similar to falling rain. The slower you tilt - the calmer and more steady the sound. The faster - the more intense.
No musical knowledge required. No sense of rhythm or prior experience needed. Simply tilt and listen.
What Are Rainsticks Made From? Three Main Construction Types
Not all rainsticks sound the same - and that's no coincidence. The sound depends greatly on the material the stick is made from.
Bamboo rainsticks - the simplest and most common option. A natural bamboo tube filled with small seeds or granules. Lightweight, colourful, and affordable. An excellent choice for those just starting out or looking for a fun and reasonable gift.
Wrapped bamboo rainsticks - the same bamboo core, but wrapped with an additional outer material. This makes the construction sturdier and more durable than plain bamboo sticks. A middle ground between entry-level and higher-quality instruments.
Cactus rainsticks - the most authentic and reliable choice. These sticks are typically made from the Copado cactus, native to the Atacama Desert in Chile: the stem is turned inside out so that the natural spines face inward, and then small seeds are poured inside. The result is a unique, organic sound that no other material can replicate.
Who Are Rainsticks For?
Music therapists and teachers - rainsticks are widely used in therapeutic practice: with children, people with special needs, and stress-reduction groups. Their repetitive, calming sound helps redirect attention and creates a safe sonic environment.
Beginners and casual players - this is one of the best choices for a first instrument. Nothing to learn, no wrong sounds, no limitations. You can simply pick it up and play.
Hobbyists and ethnic instrument enthusiasts - the rainstick has deep roots in South American indigenous traditions. It's not just an instrument but a cultural object - especially the cactus versions, handmade in Chile.
How to Choose a Rainstick?
When choosing a rainstick, it's worth considering a few things:
Length - the longer the stick, the longer each "rain shower" lasts and the richer the overall sound. Shorter sticks (50–75 cm) are better suited for children or as gifts. Longer ones (100–150 cm) suit those looking for a deeper, more meditative sound.
Material - if authenticity, sound quality, and durability matter, go for a cactus rainstick. If price and lightness are the priority, a bamboo stick will do the job beautifully.
Intended use - for therapeutic or educational purposes, all types of rainsticks work well, though bamboo or wrapped bamboo is usually sufficient. For collectors or long-term use, the cactus series is worth the investment.
