Ocean Drums: The Sound of Waves in Your Hands
An ocean drum - a flat, round percussion instrument with a membrane on both sides, filled with small granules that roll across the membrane when the drum is tilted or rotated, producing a sound closely resembling the roar of ocean waves.
Close your eyes. Tilt it slowly. The granules begin to roll across the membrane - and suddenly you're no longer in a room, but by the sea. The ocean drum is an instrument whose sound is hard to mistake for anything else. And although the principle is simple, it sounds a little different every time.
How Does an Ocean Drum Work?
Unlike a rainstick, an ocean drum is flat and round - similar to a tambourine. A membrane on both sides, and small metal granules inside. Some ocean drums, particularly sturdier ones, can also function as a tambourine. When you tilt, rotate, or tip the drum in different directions, the granules roll across the membrane - creating a wave-like sound that is sometimes calm and steady, sometimes more dynamic - depending on the movement.
Most ocean drums have at least one transparent membrane, so you can not only hear but also see the granules moving inside. This is especially appealing to children and helps build a visual and auditory connection with the instrument.
How to Choose an Ocean Drum?
The main selection criterion is size, which directly determines the depth and volume of the sound:
Small (15-25 cm) - light, compact, and ideal for children, educational use, or simply as a first instrument. In our range - Kera Audio, Goldon and Rohema models from €12.
Medium (30-50 cm) - a versatile choice. Enough tonal depth for therapeutic and casual use, while still compact enough for everyday handling. The Terre "Wavedrum" series is particularly popular in this size range thanks to its transparent membrane.
Large (60-70 cm) - a rich, deep sound suited for therapeutic sessions, stage use, intensive group work, or simply for enthusiasts. The Terre "Wavedrum" series options are especially popular in this size range too.
Who Are Ocean Drums For?
Music therapists and teachers - the ocean drum is widely used in therapeutic practice thanks to its easily controlled, soothing sound dynamics. Unlike many instruments, it can be played very quietly or more powerfully - depending on the situation. This is especially valuable when working with children, people with special needs, or stress-reduction groups.
Children and beginners - small ocean drums are among the most engaging instruments for children: easy to hold, immediately interesting to listen to, and the transparent membrane adds an extra layer of visual fascination. No musical knowledge needed - just move it and listen.
Hobbyists and meditation practitioners - the sound of waves naturally calms the mind and redirects attention. An ocean drum at home or in a meditation space is a simple but effective tool for creating a soothing sonic atmosphere.
